Sumatra Wahana Estate MicroBlend
On September 27, 2022, Starbucks introduced Sumatra Wahana Estate MicroBlend to the Seattle Reserve Roastery.
The front of the card designates this as a “MicroBlend.” It is indeed an estate coffee, meaning that all of the beans are from one farm, but this coffee blends one varietal of coffee bean processed 3 ways! The Wahana beans are washed, semi-washed, and sundried, and then roasted together for perfection.
There has not been a US release of a Sumatra Wahana Estate coffee in a long time. My research indicates that this has been an international release within recent years, but that the last United States offering of this coffee dates back to 2013. And to be clear, the 2013 offering was not a microblend of coffee beans processed in multiple ways.
The only information that I can find on the 2013 Sumatra Wahana Estate comes from my other (and really no longer updated) website, StarbucksMelody: 2013 Sumatra Wahana Estate. The 2013 article had a coffee master comparing the core Sumatra with the Reserve Sumatra. That is an excellent coffee tasting comparison idea now. It is always interesting to compare and contrast the core Sumatra with a small estate release of a Sumatran coffee.
Here’s an image I found on google which shows a China Asia Pacific release of this coffee. It is worth pointing out that coffee, as it is a farm product, will not have the exact same flavor notes year after year. And this China Asia Pacific region release of this coffee does not appear to be a blending of one varietal processed multiple ways, at least insofar as I can tell.
